the new church at hackney was built in 1791-4 by james spiller, he added a tower on the north front in 1810-14 and several porches. inside is massively open, with a horseshoe gallery, but has suffered from a fire in 1955 and was never really put right .
built by george dance the elder in 1736-40, with the portland stone tuscan columns of the portico prominent at the cross roads and the 192 foot steeple still acting as a landmark, this is a fine georgian church if suffering a bit from the proximity in london of so many really splendid classical churches.
