stanley buildings, pancras rd., london

some of the oldest working class flats left in london, this battlebridge group was built in 1864-5 by waterlow's improved industrial dwellings company, using henry roberts 1851 model dwellings as a starting point, waterlow designing and matthew allen building. only conservationist-minded squatters saved them from the destruction that befell the victorian surroundings.

292 essex rd., islington, london

10 Dec 2011 299
originally built without the windows in 1812, this was a floorcloth factory, producing the georgian equivalent to lino. huge sheets of canvas were painted time after time with patterns in oil paint, being hung up to dry in this manufactory. the layers of paint built up to quite a thickness, being polished with pumice between coats. a very few example can be found in country houses, often black and white simulating marble. later converted to beer bottling, and given windows in the 1970s to become council offices
