wells cathedral and its appurtenances. despite its lack of norman work, and strong competition, from canterbury or lincoln, and especially from ely, I sometimes think wells takes the crown as far as english cathedrals go. lots of excellent original carving, low enough to see easily, spacial sophistication in the east end and chapter house, and that wonderful first view looking down onto what is still a stone mediaeval city, an unbelievable vision that doesn't disappoint on closer acquaintance
