bexley, kent, brass c15 horn

The only brass I know with this horn insignia, possibly that of a royal forester? forests had their own laws, and administering justice could be of great pecuniary advantage to those in charge, to say nothing of the rights of disposal of game and timber. the brass looks c15.

I always love the calligraphy on C18/19 gravestones, too often ignored and unloved because outside the church. This guy was a military musician. Full marks to Bexley P.C.C. for looking after their gravestones to the extent of mending broken ones in an exemplary manner.

He looks as if he's about to bound up to you and drop his toy at your feet despite having become one with his stone kennel!

A wicked octagon in great high victorian leadwork, this design was an afterthought by the son of the original architect R.C.Carpenter. the church was begun 1848, a narthex was added by bodley in 1874

Whilst this is a great building for the work of Bodley in 1859 with all of its pre-raphaelite artwork, the Burges work suffers from the lack of the master's hand in the detail, having been built late in the c19 after his death.

The chancel of the original Bodley church of 1861 shows his earlier Butterfieldean phase, influenced by Ruskin and Street.

By Worral to a Lonsdale design of c.1895 , this window is indicative of the problems from which the Burges extension suffers, i.e.the death of Billy Burges 12 years before building began. To see what effect he had on such a design see the Jesse at Winscombe, Somerset where the lancets are tight bright jewels singing like angels in the shadowy chancel.

This monument like an immovable font cover is to the Duke of Wellington and his victories, and was designed by Carpenter and carved by J.B.Philip in 1853

Any ideas what this shows? The guy on the right seems to wear a roman helmet, but I doubt that a c.12 carver would know what that looked like, and it's anyone's guess what the left hand figure is holding. Maybe it's Pilate washing his hands ?

c12 last supper on the font. I'm not sure how much recutting has gone on here, e.g. there are no signs of holes for hasp and lock.
