early gun loops appear amongst the blind tracery inside the gate passage built around 1340. some of the royal shields of arms have been restored, but that on the right is original, showing england's leopards differenced by the label of a royal prince, probably the arms of the black prince born in 1330. the arms in the middle are those of edward the confessor, those on the left are perhaps john of gaunt's
