mercers' christ
superb carving of the dead christ of c.1500, made for the chapel of the mercers' city livery company. a lettered scroll runs alongside the figure, which may have been carved by an english sculptor but with franco-flemish influence particularly in the robe, which was originally painted an imperial purple, and is not the shroud.
