The School of Divinity is one of about 30 academic Schools within the University of St Andrews. It is also known as St Mary’s College. St Mary’s, founded in 1537, is one of the ancient colleges of the University; it has been dedicated to the study of Divinity since 1579 and still occupies the same handsome buildings in St Mary’s Quadrangle. The West Port of St Andrews was built in 1587 as a monumental entrance to the city’s South Street. It was less a defensive structure than it was a symbol of civic pride. Its design is based on that of the Netherbow in Edinburgh – which, in turn, was modelled on Paris’s Porte Saint-Honore. The gate was extensively refurbished in 1843.
