Mitchell Library Dome

Mitchell Library Dome
Glasgow

The figure on top of the Mitchell Library’s great copper dome is Minerva — or, more precisely, a bronze sculpture entitled Literature, created by the Scottish sculptor Thomas Clapperton. Although officially named Literature, she is widely referred to as Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, learning, justice, poetry, and the arts. She has stood there since the library opened in 1911.
