Here we also get ever more rough sleepers... What strikes me most in your photo is all the plastic waste. The bottles wouldn't last long in Germany where you pay deposit on them and many people collect empties to get money.

Thanks for your very kind comment, Gudrun. Scotland is planning to introduce a deposit return scheme to encourage the return of empty single-use containers for recycling. When a drink is purchased in a single-use container, a 20p deposit will be paid, which will be returned when the empty bottle or can is returned. The scheme will cover containers made of plastic, steel and aluminium, or glass. The scheme will be designed to tackle throwaway culture and will help protect the environment. The scheme will be the first in the UK and is expected to provide 2 billion drink containers a year for recycling. Cheers, Joe

Yes, I read about this and hope it will be introduced soon! It really does help to keep the environment cleaner.

Norway has had a recycling 'tax' on plastic bottles and aluminum cans for ages. They don't need to place an extra deposit on glass as over 95% is recycled anyway. I expect this is true for Scotland too, so no wonder there is a backlash about putting a deposit on glass bottles. I just hate to think of St.Andrews being like this.
