Whyte-Melville Memorial Fountain, Market Street, St Andrews

Whyte-Melville Memorial Fountain, Market Street, St Andrews
This memorial is erected in a central part of Market-street in St. Andrew's, where the thoroughfare is of unusual width. The stone used in the structure is principally Dumfries red sandstone, obtained from the well-known Corncockle quarries on the estate of Sir Alexander Jardine, Bart, Lockerbie, and while an agreeable warmth of colour is thus obtained, a telling effect of contrast is secured by the introduction of columns and copings of polished Dalbeattie granite. Quoted from the Scottish Architects' website

I think it was in Market street that the Swing Boats, my favourites, were erected during the Lammas Fair. The Wall of Death was always in South street. I can't remember which street the Dodgems were in. I never liked them anyway. ;-)

I don't remember any of this, Amelia. What I do remember is the opening, in 1973, of the Students Association Building in St Mary's Place. I was there on the day of the opening. I can remember watching the mud wrestling. All the best, Joe
