Imaginary Malevich's red squares: Folds

Imaginary Malevich's red squares: Folds
"Everywhere there is craft and technique; everywhere there is artistry and form. Art itself, technique, is ponderous and clumsy, and because of its awkwardness it obstructs that inner element..." -Kazimir Malevich

Thanks to Isabel for the tip to use 'cloudy' white balance mode. Pictures of red (dark) also seem to require some heavy darkening, even when the image already has been underexposed. Red as a dark color fools the light meter to choose wrong white balance and over expose the image.

What a wonderful abstract image you made, Sami! Thank you so much for the explanation of the part white balance plays in photographing red. I couldn't figure out why none of my red flowers photographed well.

You probably already know red begins to look almost black in twilight. Therefore it is "dark color", and light meter probably tends to overexpose the image where is a lot of red. Therefore one very likely needs to under expose or fix it on post processing.

Then what comes to wrong white balance it happens with all colors. You have probably experienced this when trying to shoot some blue flowers. That is also a very difficult color to get it right!

I'm not sure it's only about how dark it is but about "warmth".
I find that when I shoot something with lots of reds, AWB makes it much too cold. With my Canon "cloudy" has 6500 Kelvin (more yellows to the red) whereas AWB lands at 2850 Kelvin (way too much blue to the red)!

It of course also depends on what the actual ambient light is. Cloudy pre set is often good choice when shooting outside. But inside, and when using spotlights, some other pre set is probably better.

And yes, I have done similar discovery with most of the cameras I have used. Shooting plain red surface, AWB makes them look blueish.

True! I usually don't bother about white balance at all and leave it on AWB. I shoot RAW and adjust in post processing.
And of course it also depends on how your monitor is calibrated- my notebook shows cooler colours than my tablet but I still haven't got around to doing anything about it;-)

Shooting RAW is the best solution! =)

So, you can then choose one of the white balance presets also afterwards, if the software allows it.

Gudrun club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… club
In Lightroom you can use not only presets but also Kelvin and a slider for the amount of reds and greens -so you have full flexibility. And yet I'm still struggling at times;-)
