Spring cleaning

Spring cleaning
I will be quitting some more groups again. This is only because I have no time to be an active group member.

More on this topic, in case you have not noticed these articles of mine before:

Yes, I know the group admins become noticed when someone quits. So, also therefore this post of mine, to give an explanation ;-)

Well, actually I have been rather lazy lately... Or more like busy at work, and not much time for anything else.

I became an administrator of one group without my consent after the administrator left. I posted a thread to other group members asking if anyone wanted to take over. I was going to end the group, but I saw people still contributing, so I chose to leave the group rather than close it. I also left a message to the next member who automatically became admin to let them know what happened. There were two ipernity members who started all these groups, and then apparently left ipernity suddenly. This group I mention was one of the groups they ran. I since went to all the groups they started that I was member of, and found either they were made private or closed to further photo submissions by the hapless members who got "promoted' automatically to admin. It was a good time for me to quit these groups. I think it is most inconsiderate to leave a group you start without giving notice to its members! Good luck on your search for an administrator, Sami.

I "inherited" 3 of my groups that way. I managed to make a go of them. It isnt easy always and it isnt often possible to take over a group either.

As the "Help and Contact and Moderation" person now.. I have to explain many times to folk who get groups dumped on them that I cant help them.. and the way to go is simply leave the group if you cant get another admin.

We are hoping to eventually get a tool for Moderation that can close dead groups etc. Thre is absolutely no way we can do that with what we have at the moment. But.. it is on the List !

I will most likely do the same, and just leave that coffee group, if no-one shows any interest. I just don't have time and energy to start activating group members and "headhunting" new ones.

And I appreciate what you do, Pam. It is not always easy to explain how these ipernity groups work. And indeed I hope we finally get that "group killing tool".

Interesting thread! I had no idea of any of it! I will re-think my membership of some groups now!

Cheers! =)

In a long run it makes many things easier. Like the moment when you choose on what group you wish to contribute. If the list on tiny popup menu is short, it is much easier to get it done. And in general it also help one remember what groups are worth to visit and browse.

For example I often forgot to visit some cool groups I really like, when the list was long. I especially like playful groups like 'Bilderdomino' and 'Pareidolia', and the latter one is really nice to just browse around.

Yes, I visited Pareidolia once, liked it but forgot to join. I was then invited to add a few shots to the group, so I did but can't remember anything about it except that I knew I liked it.
I simply don't visit groups much and rarely think of them when I go online! And then I find I become administrator and/or moderator to some groups when I have no wish to be (no time and no knowledge of what I should be doing).
I find the whole thing a bit confusing. I only started to add photos to groups when I was ticked off for not accepting invitations to add my photos. So I added them on request out of politeness and then got told off for 'bombing' some groups. I almost gave up on groups altogether!

The general advice of course is to read the possible group rules if there are such given. But also things always could be better, and group admins should do their best to clearly point what the rules are.

I have had a problem (and still have) to find out whether the group requires one to join as a member, or allows also contributions from non-members. Therefore I usually just ignore most of the suggestions.

Dear Sami,
the organization and administration of groups is one of the biggest mistakes at ipernity. Maybe one day we'll be able to clean it up before the chaos takes over completely.

Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Bergfex club
Ultimately this spring cleaning of mine is to make things easier for myself ;-)

For example when choosing groups where I want to contribute, it is way much easier when there is only 10-20 to choose from. Two years ago I had over 100. And that really did not made any sense.

Interesting about groups Sami, I often comment on an upload from inside the group and you would only know that if you have not shared the image elsewhere. I have only recently heard about sharing to group members only and I guess there is a large proportion of the membership who don't know about this method either.
On the other hand I also need to scan the new uploads as well, else I would not come across images such as this one. ( I would have suggested it as an ideal candidate for "Still life" in Project 21(, unfortunately Out of date. Great image anyway Sami.

Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to HappySnapper
Well, I can always take a new version for Project 21. There is always something what one can try to improve ;-)

I have tried to find solutions on how to keep the group members activated inside the group. One major problem is lack of proper group discussion notices. I have tried RSS readers for my own needs, but they are not a good solution either. I just do not understand why the ipernity developers decided to keep the group discussions noticements separate from other news.
