Bring owls to Athens

Bring owls to Athens
"To do or undertake something redundant, pointless, or futile. It refers to the city of Athens in the time of Ancient Greece, where silver coins were minted with the image of an owl (which were abundant in the city). Thus, to bring either owls or silver to Athens would be a useless venture."

~TheFreeDictionary: idioms.thefreedictionary.com/bring+owls+to+Athens

City of Tampere first spent years to decide what would be the most prominent addition to the public transportation. Then they decided to build a tramway through the town.

Now trees are cut down, and roadworks are blocking the traffic for years.

Over ten years ago I read an article saying the town could have built a system to collect biogas at the local wastewater treatment plant, and run the buses with that gas.

It looks like we human beings can't do anything else but to hold up the inevitable...

Well, I guess it's time to plant yet another tree.

I wonder if anyone has calculated how much energy becomes wasted during the building process...

Well, maybe later on town also makes that biogas collecting system, to run the tram =D

City also now has it's first bus running with electricity. So, maybe there is some sense on all this.

I haven't hears that story before, Sami, but it is similar to the saying, ' Carrying coals to Newcastle' . Yet another pointless venture as 15,000 tonnes of coal were being exported annually from the area —and therefore any attempt to sell coal to Newcastle would be doomed.

City and town planners often get things wrong, and human beings seem to treat the Earth as a infinite provider.

We are lucky enough to live in a small village, and my garden is a source of joy to me. I use no pesticides, herbicides or fungicides, and encourage wild life in any way I can. Of course there are unwanted visitors, but everything seems to balance out in the end.

Very good story. How clever. I love trees. I live in a woody area and I have a number of trees myself. Like Amelia I encourage all sorts of animals

I had never heard about that saying, but I knew the one about coals to Newcastle.
In Swedish we have a saying that You shouldn't give the baker's children buns. :-)

A little reminder of what was, our neighbours have just cut down two big magnolias and a big pink flower thorn tree, in peak bloom, that were quite beautiful

Seems that little thought goes into the decisions that are made when it comes to urban development and our precious environment. So sad to see a tree cut down.

It is so sad to see a tree stump. We had to cut down two elm trees due to Dutch Elm disease, but we replanted maples in their place. The maples are now almost as large as the house, but I still miss the elms.

We have the same saying: Eulen nach Athen tragen:-) Nominally in our town new trees have to be planted for trees felled, only they don't have to do it in the same place.I hope the Tampere tramway doesn't turn out as chaotic as our railway station (way behind schedule and even more above budget...).

Beautiful shot , the red paint makes it so clear that the paint is useless.
