If I were a girl...

If I were a girl...
...my name would be Saara (Sara, Sarah). My mother got this statue when she was expecting me. Ever since it decorated our mantelpiece and got a name Saara. One family friend once told one should turn it standing against the wall for a change because statues are meant to be seen from all sides. When I grew up, and our childhood home went under hammer in 1990's economical crises, my mother gave this statue to me. Now it decorates our bathroom, and of course she turns around every now and then.

This shot is inspired by The Sunday Challenge "Personal belonging". My technical challenge was to "squeeze" high-key and the low-key photography into same image, but I failed because I just ran out of spotlights. One more lamp would have been needed to remove the shadow from the top of the statue. So, I guess the technical challenge here is selective lighting.

If you like to see how this was made, then see here: www.ipernity.com/doc/serola/34976119
BUT don't, if you want to stick into illusion =P

EDIT: Retrospectively posting this to 'NOT the Sunday Challenge', because this also fits to 'high-key' and 'low-key' challenges had at TSC during May 2015.

Xata, LutzP, , and 20 other people have particularly liked this photo

I think you did this very well. It must have taken ages to set it up and get this great result.

It took ages! =D Our dog was either very amused or annoyed watching me walking around the house to find all the prop needed for this.

Ambitious challenge you set for yourself Sami ... I know I could not have pulled this off that's for sure. A bit of sadness with your story to go along with image as well.

Well, it was pretty easy to do after all because I had thought it all through in my mind =)

That's cute Sami, love the story.. you pretty much made the challenge you set out for yourself, good thinking. I said it couldn't be done and here in public I admit to being wrong!

You think I succeeded? =O If you think so, then I guess I really did =) And now you probably understand what the "preview" was about ;-) On that one I of course cheated, and was just practicing the general idea. After that I got the idea to use a mirror =)

I do not agree with you on the matter of the enlightment: for me the low key part is very good as it is and keeps some mystery. Too much perfection in the making of kills feelings or emotion the photograph can transmit, as it is the case here.

Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to Xata club
Thank you very insightful feedback, Xata. The idea was to try arrange lights so that one is able to show both, low key and high key in the same image. Well, this indeed looks quite "sterile", and I usually prefer using ambient light. But it was fun to test.
