Albertina is the name of the Palais Erzherzog Albrecht. Empress Maria Theresa had the palace built for a close friend behind today's State Opera House, next to the Hofburg, as early as 1744. In 1792 the palace became the property of Albert Casimir Duke of Saxe-Teschen, a son-in-law of Empress Maria Theresa, who had previously been forced to flee the Austrian Netherlands with his collection of paintings due to the war. Today's name Albertina refers to him for the building and above all the painting collection, which is considered one of the most important graphic collections in the world. The long-disputed Soravia Wing in the entrance area, a 60-metre-long flying roof, was erected in 2003 by the architect Hans Hollein.
