Northern Shovelers (Anas clypeata)

Northern Shovelers (Anas clypeata)
So, the bottom bird is more or less what i would expect for a 1st winter Northern Shoveler. My question is on the upper bird. More compact shape; much more definition on the feathers on the sides and breast; colors washed out compared to the bottom bird; narrow crescent on a bluish head. Could this be a Blue-Winged Teal x Northern Shoveler hybrid? Seems to fit when compared to the photos at www.flickr.com/groups/hybridbirds/discuss/72157601790654095/, but my track record with supposed hybrids is not good.

Both photos taken on November 13, 2011 at Quail Creek Park in Broomfield, Colorado.
