Moby Dick Domesticated

Moby Dick Domesticated
Pictured on a coffee cup--my customary cup, in fact--Ahab's great white whale. Wonder what Melville would make of it.

A frustrating time, actually. I messed up and had to do some serious unraveling.

I have not seen a reference to Moby Dick in the UK for a very long time. The 1950s film was a big thing for me when I was young, saw it several times and read 'digests' of the story. Only in later life did I realise the significance of Ahab's obsession and the lesson behind that part of the story, of course - and I did not read the complete book until 2007!

It's not an easy book to read (especially for modern readers, I suspect). I read it first when I was about 20 and have read it three or four times since then, most recently about the same time you were reading it. I always thought Gregory Peck a strange choice to play Ahab, but Huston did about as good a job making a film of Moby Dick as anyone could, I'd say. (Huston's last film, Joyce's The Dead, is masterful, as if Joyce himself had a hand in the production.)
