Athelhampton Pyramids.

Athelhampton Pyramids.
The gardens date from 1891 and include the Great Court with 12 giant yew topiary pyramids. This glorious Grade I architectural garden is full of vistas and surprises with spectacular fountains and the River Piddle flowing through it. The pyramids are over 30tf (10m) high.

Frans Schols, Gillian Everett, Ulrich John, Eric Desjours and 32 other people have particularly liked this photo

You have captured the yew topiary very well indeed and the weather helped too. What a lot of work it must be to keep the trees in good condition and shape.

Thank you very much Nick. We spoke to a couple of the gardeners. They said the topiary had recently been trimmed, so we chose a good time to visit.

The 12 yews were planted in 1891 Gunter, so they have stood the test of time very well....with the help of excellent gardeners :-) Thank you for your very kind comment.

I wonder how many gardeners are employed in order to maintain these yew pyramids? They are spectacular. The ones in Weshpool are cut like cloud formations. Less formal but spectacular too.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Amelia club
Quite a lot of skilled gardeners I would think Amelia. It would be interesting to see them at work on the pyramids! I like the cloud formation cut. They have them at Montacute House & Gardens. As you say, spectacular.

It is the first garden "room" you come to on entering Athelhampton Gardens Keith, and it really does take your breath away with the size of them! The other "rooms" are lovely too, in a more subtle way :-)

When this type of garden was popular winters were much more severe it's easy to visualise a very junior apprentice in a snowstorm equipped with a very long cane making sure that the snow didn't build up and break any branches

Buen jueves, Rosa.
