Separate Doors!

Separate Doors!
This lovely little building in Rode, Somerset, is Victorian and was the village school. The left door is for girls and the right is for boys, so as was the way then, they were taught separately. There is a more modern extension to the back of the building, and it is still a school, now the Rode Methodist VC First School, where they have 85 pupils. VC stands for, voluntary controlled.

A modern extension was added behind this building.

What a fascinating old building, with its slate roof and ornamental windows. I wonder if the boys and girls still are expected to use different doors?

I thought it had been converted to a dwelling at first George, but then looking around the side and back, I could see it was still a lively little school with a welcoming entrance for boys and girls together :)

Such a lovely old school building. it looks quite splendid in the diffused light. I like the shape of the windows in the roof and especially the arched windows and ornate ironwork on the ground floor. The sturdy looking red doors are very attractive.

A beautiful little series Rosa..............very nicely done!

I liked the building very much as well Keith. The windows look typically Victorian Gothic in style I thought. So many interesting building in the village. There is actually another little school building, but that is now a house.

Thank you very much for your interest and kind comments.

Wonderful little building Rosalyn, several of these first schools are scattered around the villages here in Norfolk and all seem to be 1800's built.

Thank you Maurice. So many are now homes, so it was nice to see this one still used as a school, with the extensions of course. I love to see these little Victorian buildings.

Hi Rosa,

A very nice photo of this unusual building! It reminds me so much of my primary school, which also had separate entrances. Of course 'Equal Opportunities' and LGBT were not invented in those days!!!!

Best Wishes
Peter

Hi Rosa,

Thank you for your kind comments. It would need a lot of doors these days ;-)) Thankfully this is still a school, whereas a lot that I have seen in villages are now dwellings.

Best wishes,
Rosa.

What a lovely presentation, Rosalyn! I loved all of the pictures which show us the story so well. It was really interesting to learn about the two doors for each gender. And nice to know that the school is still used today for a fairly small group of kids. Really neat. :) Thank you for sharing, I always love your shows!

A good sturdy building nice to see it is still used for the intended purpose, probably don't use the potbellied stove now !!!!! As you go into Leicester Slater Primary has boy and girl entrances
( not used now ) that opened in 1875 Grade II now it has 167 pupils who speak 28 languages

Common practice back then Peter. I remember the little stoves in my first infants class! I also remember tripping over some coke that was used in it....and still have the scar on my knee!!

Love this architecture and that golden tone of the stonework. Really nice to see such a small but grand building still being used for the original purpose. I wonder how many children have passed through those doors and what sort of lives they led. All in all a really fine collection Rosa.

Thank you for all your great comments Doug. I have tried to find more of the schools history, but all I can find is details of the actual building. It's such an interesting village that I would like to know more about it. Definitely worth another visit.
Best wishes, Rosa.
