Gentle Street ~ Frome

Gentle Street ~ Frome
With PiP ~ Gentle Street is a narrow and historic street, with many houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Paved in its entirety with stone setts and once a major entry, it goes back to the origins of Frome in the 7th century. Once called Hunger Lane because of its steepness, but later the Gentle family gave their name to it.

Aschi "Freestone", Chris10, Marco F. Delminho, and 41 other people have particularly liked this photo

Hi Rosa,

You have such a wonderful way of finding and capturing these little villages. Places we would never have thought of ... You should write a book... and illustrate it with all your photos!
I am so very impressed!

Best Wishes
Peter

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your very kind compliments Peter. Surprisingly, this street is just a few steps away from Frome's very busy High Street and even closer to their historic Cheap Street.
Have a great week Peter.

Best wishes, Rosa.

I prefer the second one just edit out the Landrover and you have a perfect time has stood still image. I have a thing about trying to move unwanted objects, often by cropping. I hope your Monday is a good one Rosalyn

Oh Peter, I liked the Landrover in the picture ;-) I have a couple of pic's taken looking up the street with no vehicles. In fact they are not allowed any further up the street. It's wheelie bins that annoy me. I always seem to pick bin day to visit a pretty town or village....not this time though.
Have a good new week.

Time seems to have stopped here, Rosa! Another charming little village to enjoy in these beautiful pictures of yours. The ancient houses are so fine and the stone setts makes the pavement great.I like the people in the street too, who make the scene more lively. Have a nice Monday and a lovely week too!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Adele club
It does seem that way Adele. Surprisingly, this street is a very short walk away from a busy High Street in the market town of Frome. The town has become very aware of their historic streets, which is good because twenty years ago many of them were in danger of being demolished!
Thank you for your lovely comments and I wish you a great new week....Rosa.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Nick Weall club
It does Nick. It's much longer but not quite so steep. With the Frome by-pass Beckington is now a quieter place and their historic buildings are being well cared for also. The Woolpack is still doing well!

Absolutely magnificent. Both views are wonderful, but I especially like the main image. How I would LOVE to remove that pair of people and the darn care! Still, it doesn't take away from the gorgeous homes and brickwork on the road. LOVELY. And the turn in the road too, is super...I just love this spot! Thanks for the info too, I'm not surprised that it's notably special!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Janet Brien club
Oh dear, I was happy to have both of those things in the picture Janet, ha ha!! I do have an image of the road from the other end looking upwards with no vehicle in it...just a man ;-) I appreciate your kind comments and opinions....honest ;-))

Such a beautifully composed shot Rosa. If it hadn't been for the jeep and the relatively modern clothes this image would be completely timeless!

I love the amount of detail you've captured and the warm earthy colours are just gorgeous.

Thank you very much Keith. Opinion is divided on the vehicle and people in the picture, which is good...I like that. The house with the railings in front used to be The Wagon & Horses Coaching Inn....that must have been a tight squeeze down this street!!

Although we lived but six miles away when I was a lad, we only occasionally went in on the infrequent bus service, just long enough to do the shopping we needed. So I don't remember this lovely view. Thanks for filling in a gap in my past!

Where do the folks who live here hide their wheelie bins? They are the curse of modern day living. ;-)
One must be very fit to live here, Rosa. A really beautiful English village.

 Rosalyn Hilborne

Good question Amelia! No large vehicle could access this street, so I'm not sure what they do. One thought; I saw a little walk way to a car park marked private and I wonder if that belongs to the residence in Gentle Street. Maybe that is also where they take their rubbish. Frome is a good place to walk if you want to keep fit....I was given a pedometer for Christmas! Do you think they are trying to tell me something ;-))

Excellent pair of images from this beautiful English village Rosa. I like the wonderful old buildings on either side, they seem to grow out of the stone setts. The two figures give a nice sense of scale and depth as the downward slope of the street take eye right into the scene. Thanks for the historic notes.

Hey Rosa! These are two great photos!! I like them both equally, but the large, first shot shows me more up-close of those buildings, Im so in awe of these old stone buildings! I soooo wonder how old they are ... And the steep decline of the streets, its an amazing shot of this "Gentle Street " ~~ Frome "....well composed Rosa.. Best wishes, Sarah
5 years ago.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Sarah O' club
Hi Sarah, thanks for your great comments. The houses in this street are 16th and 17th century and from what I read it was the main street and stopping off point for horse and coaches going further west. Now Frome is a busy and vibrant town with lots of the old streets well cared for but a few modern or 1960's monstrosities. So pleased you enjoyed the pictures. Best wishes, Rosa.
