Winchester ~ Alfred the Great. (Elfred)

Winchester ~ Alfred the Great. (Elfred)
King Alfred ruled Wessex from 871 until his death in 899. At the time of his enthronement the Vikings had taken control and were threatening Wessex. Alfred developed a sophisticated military strategy involving the establishment of fortified centres. His capital at Winchester was the largest. He gradually won back some of the lands taken by the Vikings and his diplomacy led eventually to the formation of the English nation. His remarkable combination of soldier, statesman and scholar earned him the title 'the Great' - an honour bestowed on no other English king.

I used to walk by here on my infrequent visits to Winchester and pay my respects (after all I prefer speaking English to Danish!)

I'll go along with that Andy! As much as I like the Danes....my (as good as) son-in-law is half Danish ;-)

Of course King Alfred's Cafe in Shaftesbury perpetuates the story of the cakes ~~~

It seems a lot of us know the cafe in Shaftesbury, and the story of Alfie and the blessed cakes. There is just a hint of an ip group here .. in the breeze ... somewhere ... somehow ... no ... no ...gone ...
Oh well.

Ha ha...I forget to add pic's to groups at the best of times Andy. Usually have to be prompted!
A few years ago the name was changed, the food became very expensive and they made if difficult for disabled people to enter the premises...thankfully they are now gone and the shop has reverted to its well known name :-))
