2009 Canyonlands Trip - The Needles

Folder: Travel Stuff
Squaw Flats and Big Water Canyon, then back to Denver through a Mars-like dust storm -- complete with rolling tumbleweeds.

Wall and Clouds

Wall and Clouds

I took a lot of photos of this particular area, since it was picturesque to start with and had really interesting lighting that kept changing with the movement of the clouds.

Through the Crust

22 Mar 2009 111
The path back to the car, surrounded by bacterial soil crusts, sage, and stunted shrubs. One very nice thing about this hike was, even at about seven miles round trip, we were out in around four hours (including a long stop for lunch) thanks to the path being largely level. The only up and down was over the saddle between the two canyons.

Claws

A pair of dead trees reaching up like claws, and in the background a rock formation we both decided looked like an Egyptian falcon statue.

The main body of Needles, where we hiked last year.

Mesa

Looks vaguely like a surfaced submarine.

Six-Shooter

One of the two buttes by that name. I think it might be North Six Shooter.

I probably took fifty shots of just this feature, and this is one of the few that turned out reasonably well. Had the same problem last year, but didn't get anything good.
