London - small bit of a larger artwork 19

London - small bit of a larger artwork 19
this is about 1/300th of the painting

yes, the painting is large, but this area isn't that big at all yet has such incredible detail!

does anyone know who the painter is?
(I do, just wondering if we have any painting aficionados out there.)

Well it caught my eye but my education is insufficient to answer your quiz.

As you can see below from some of our members who have a fancier painting education than me (I know the answer because I photographed the label that went with the painting), the answer is:

Sandro Botticelli
Venus and Mars
from about 1485

Photographed in "The National Gallery" in London.

A wonderful detail!

Regarding the painter: I don't really know much about old painting (and only a bit more about modern art), but there are some hints:
1. The painting is in the National Gallery in London.
2. Given the naturalistic style and assuming it is a notable painting, it was probably painted sometime between 1350 and 1850.
3. It shows a scene with someone in a white garment sitting on a red cushion or armchair.
4. The garment doesn't look like fashion contemporary to the painter, so it is probably a historical, mythical, or biblical scene.

Moving the mouse pointer over the links in the "collection highlights" section in the Wikipedia article (it is easier in the German version as the list is smaller), there is a picture with a white garment with golden edges (it took me a second look because I was expecting smaller figures)...

So I guess the painter is Sandro Botticelli. ;-)

I like your detective work! Your middle name doesn't happen to be "Holmes", does it?

Did you discover it was in the National Gallery via the map feature? I would say you are now have much more knowledge about old paintings, having checked out so many in the wikipedia article.

I will reveal the truth and the painting's title in a few days.

The location was of course taken from the map feature. The Address "Chelsea Military Antiques" seemed a bit odd, but the previous photo (just 10min earlier) shows "The National Gallery Salisbury Wing" and is located in the same block...

Haha - "Chelsea Military Antiques" - nope, you were right to assume "The National Gallery" - though I have no idea what wing I might have been in.

Yes, of course you are right.

I'm curious - did you recognize Botticelli's style, or do you know the painting so well you knew it from this little bit?
Giorgio Bree has replied to raingirl club
I immediately thought he was an Italian painter and probably Botticelli,
so I went to look for a painting I already knew,
Venere and Marte .

If I had been playing this game, I probably would have thought similar to you. My art history training is minimal, but that doesn't keep me from reveling in the beauty and artistry of paintings.
