Mexican Wolves

Mexican Wolves nearly became extinct and are extremely endangered. A subspecies of the gray wolf, they are the smallest North American wolf. They were exterpated in the wild when the last 5 were captured in the late 70's. After their numbers increased significantly in captive breeding programs, rereintroduction to the wild began in 1998. These two, at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, are part of the captive breeding program (DSC03581)
Willie B

Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia. Named after Atlanta Mayor, William Berry Hartsfield, Willie B died of pneumonia at the age of 41 on February 2, 2000, seven months after this photo was taken. He was born in Cameroon and had lived at the zoo for 39 years. He was kept in a cage for 27 years until the zoo's Ford African Rain Forest Exhibit opened in 1988. Three female gorillas were placed with him. Ultimately, he fathered five offspring (for a photo of his first offspring, a female named Kudzu, see www.ipernity.com/doc/picture_taker/32055573/in/album/346469) . Scanned 35mm negative. (8B011)
