Captain Scott led an ill-fated scientific expedition to the South Pole. He and his companions perished as they neared the end of their return journey from the Pole. His life-time achievements were many too many to record here.

This artwork is on the side of the Lady Hamilton Bed & Breakfast Hotel, opposite The Hard, on Portsmouth's waterfront. The title is my own interpretation as I have no idea what the artist called it.
Sculpted by Mark DeGraffenried, this is one of a number of identical sculptures placed in ports around Europe, including Portsmouth and Liverpool, at the time of commemorative voyages, in 2001, by three tall ships, following the routes of European emigrants to America.
