These diesel trains have their engines inside the main body of one of the carriages, rather than under the floor as most modern diesel multiple units do. The noise of the engine reverberates in the compartments next door. So they were nicknamed Thumpers.

These engines are hybrid, with a diesel motor which drives a generator to power an electric traction motor. The latter can also use current picked up from a third rail, where that is available. This has made these engines very versatile.

This is the original station building. The two-storey section is a private house and some of the single storey section is in use as the office of the local parish council.
