'Explosion ' is the department of the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard that records and displays naval armaments. It is in some of the buildings of the dockyard's former ammunition stores. They were located in what was then an isolated part of the harbour, so that, should there be any unfortunately accident with explosive materials, it would avoid damaging the other installations and naval vessels in port. It can be accessed by land from Gosport, but there is a ferry service linking the main Museum with Explosion and the submarine museum in Haslar, just south of Gosport.
These four Georgian houses have been listed as of special interest by Historic England. Full details of their features and some of their history can be found on the HE website. They all appear to have or have had commercial businesses using at least their ground floors.
'Explosion!' is the museum of naval armaments within the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard located in the former naval munitions depot. It was built in an isolated area upstream from the main dockyard as a precaution against any accidental explosions damaging naval vessels or other infrastructure.
