Herefordshire - some railway photographs
Folder: Railways including tramways
These photos were taken by my father, the Reverend John Sutters, who grew up in Hereford and returned there when visiting his parents.

Given the GWR company it is keeping and the water column and coaches, I wonder if this is an absorbed loco. However, smudgy though it is, the number plate seems to show a five figure starting in 6. Any thoughts?
This is another example of details going missing (because they were in 'comments' rather than 'description') when I moved from Flickr. I think that this was an old Lancashire & Yorkshire loco redeployed by the London Midland Region further south.

These two photos, taken at Barrs Court, Hereford in 1995, were by the brother-in-law of my father's friend, Tom Howls. If he, or anyone else who holds the copyright, has any objection to their presence on Flickr, they will be removed immediately. This would be a shame as they are very good photos.

This is most likely to have been on the lines around Ledbury, if it is one of Dad's, which is why I have uploaded it into the Great Western group, but I couldn't be sure where. The track is interesting as what should be point blades seem to turn into check rails. The track goes over a bridge and around a bend. I suppose it could have been a single railcar but I don't think the window is angled as on the GWR type.
LATER - Although I lost the full explanation I got for this track layout, when I moved from Flickr, this appears to be a temporary interlacing of two tracks to reduce the lines' width, while work is being done on the bridge.

GWR diesel railcar - BR W19W - Ledbury - 23.6.1958

From a group of loose prints, many of which seem to be by Michael Brown of Harrogate. This one doesn't have a named photographer, but the notes on the back may be MB's.

I think this came from an envelope of my Dad's negatives marked 1962*, but they have got a bit jumbled up as I have sorted through to find ones that don't seem to have been preserved as prints in his albums.
It is worth viewing this at one of the higher magnifications as there is a lot of detail there - from a negative that is 8cm x 5cm. There are photographers all over the place, even between the tracks.
* Hunting around on the net, this looks more like its reappearance under Bulmer's patronage with their set of Pullman cars, in 1971.
7.12.2012 - now we know when, where and why - and in colour - John Freeth had an almost identical photo in colour, when this was on my Flickr photostream. His photo can be found at www.flickr.com/photos/60631240@N02/6092349170/in/photolist-ahmT9W-7vCEMZ-borbXp-bNcf6i-bqLHTC-ijtcDD-c1swb-5DeXwG-dL1Nph-7w1peS-NGUAF-6Hd3CP-7k95iD-bTGS7-GyfNf-78s2hh-asvRKU-8BTqDZ-4MxTA4-a91L84-7BWnn9-7zAHCE-22fr4F-4YdfMP-786CyP-7hw5gK-2ytt5d-9spxdf-9nenoA-78dBfW-dqyJu9-ieCmaC-jpycW2-39Ftnb-8S48nH-e66G97-4DYnqA-78pAzj-2a1CKW-bXatHA-9aciP2-5EDqLq-9ac6yB-9acdZZ-fgnEBB-e9NP1h-gBRXKL-7yiEhk-5HQ1ip-bY2nSm

Return to Mainline Steam - 6000 King George V at Patchway - October 1971
On Saturday 2 October 1971, 6000 King George V makes a triumphant return to mainline steam, following the relaxation of the ban imposed by British Rail in August 1968. The train ran from Hereford to Tyseley, via Severn Tunnel Junction and Oxford, and crowds thronged the lineside to witness this occasion. Here the KIng makes easy work of the steep incline out of Patchway Tunnel, near Bristol, on its historic journey.
