Saint Peter's Church, East Blatchington, Sussex, England

It is good to have a picture of the artist with her window, for once. It can be seen best with the afternoon light behind it. Most of the church's services are in the morning, so most people do not get to see it at its brightest.

'Messy Church' is an art group for children They created the buildings from scrap card tubes and egg boxes, to fit on to the terraces. I hope you are enjoying a happy time, whether or not celebrating Christmas as a religious festival. Best wishes for 2020.

This might seem an odd photo, with the Palm Sunday procession around the outside of the churchyard off to one side and the bulk of the photo taken up by trees and the rather plain flint wall, but the wall is a listed building in its own right. The photo was initially a preparatory shot taken while waiting for the procession to arrive, at well under the 30mph limit the poster indicates! It's amazing what rubbish turns out to have a use, as I tell my wife when she complains about the clutter in the garage.

Something else I was doing in my break from photography, although I usually record any work of this nature. This plaque is located on an internal wall of the church, which has had water penetration problems caused by inappropriate mortar being used on the flintstone wall. The back of the brass was green with corrosion and the front had a very patchy varnish finish. The varnish and corrosion were cleaned off, the lettering, which is etched into the surface, was repainted where necessary and new coats of special metal lacquer were applied.

I only noticed this plant and about twenty more of the same species on a southwest-facing flint wall recently. According to our local wildlife group, they are not usually found this far east, on the south coast of England. They do not seem to have a very long life-span as they had shrivelled up by the beginning of July. I must look out for them next Spring.
