Bishopstone Station ‘pill-boxes’ exterior North West embrasure

Bishopstone Station

Folder: Castles, fortifications and military installations.
This album was created primarily to record the very unusual fortifications that were added to the Southern Railway's Art Deco period design. The station overlooks the approaches to Newhaven Harbour and the estuary of the Sussex Ouse. The pillboxes would have been manned by soldiers armed with machine guns and light anti-tank weapons.

On the first floor of the station building one can see the machine gun ports of the coastal defence pill box. The building is up at footbridge level, so the gunners on the other side had a view across Seaford Bay to the approaches to Newhaven Harbour. This side just looks across the valley leading up to Bishopstone village.
