Thanks, Roger. It's a shame that the structure wasn't saved. I think it was more about the economics than the structural issues. At least the fire brigade and RNLI managed to stop the fire from spreading.

The fire was caused by an electrical fault behind wooden panelling. There have been many fires on piers. In recent times Hastings pier and Weston-super-Mare piers have both been very seriously damaged and restored, Hastings now is largely an open deck. Weston's pier has been thoroughly rebuilt in a modern style. Brighton's West Pier and Southsea's South Parade Pier have also had fires. The West Pier is now a collection of twisted girders rusting in the sea. Southsea's one looks in good condition. Its worst fire was a long time ago. The wooden structures on the decks and poor maintenance, because of financial problems make fires a common risk.
