It appears that these old railway carriages may have been part of a scheme to rehouse service personnel returning from World War 1. There is a group on Flickr with further examples of this type of development known as 'plotlands'

One of these old carriage conversions came on the market a couple of years ago. It was one of the larger conversions that seemed to have swallowed up the host carriage. There was a corridor with all the old compartments, with their panelled doors, on one side. Obviously the old structure had been retained within the outer shell.
