'railcar' was what Dad had put in his album note. I thought it should be 'rail-motor'. Mind you I usually called them push & pull trains.The coach at the other end of the train had a driving compartment from which the driver could control the train when travelling with that end in front. The fireman remained on the engine operating some of the controls when signalled to do so. Engines used on these trains had to have special equipment added to link with the 'auto-coach'. Some trains were operated with two coaches in front and two behind the engine. There is a photo of one such train in G.M.Kichenside's Railway Carriage Album - page 161.
