Another group of scans of small, 4"x3", prints of photos taken of or by my grandfather while working in Egypt in around 1913

A contribution to Vintage Photos Theme Park - People in or by distinctive trees. This was taken when my grandfather was working in Egypt, installing electrical systems in the Abbassia Barracks, Cairo. I think grandpa is the chap standing at the front of the tree, but mustachioed gents in solar topees all look very similar. A fairly distinctive tree with a fairly distinctive name.

Terrific photo. What an adventure that must have been.

Some of relatives on both sides of my family and of that generation seem to have been a lot more adventurous than I have been. It is good that they recorded their travels and exploits.

Quite interesting! I'd never heard about this tree before, so I did some searching. Wikipedia refers to it as the Tree of the Virgin, and a site called the Photorientalist has a great online exhibition with additional historical photos. See The Virgin’s Tree in Egypt: A Story of Survival, by Norbert Schiller.

Quite an historic photograph! Your family ere quite amazing in their travels!
Sycamore trees are remarkable - I can understand how legends are created around them. they always seem like storybook trees to me. There are some beauties around here - but we are at the very edge of where they can survive, so they are not common.
Thanks, Alan, for the excellent link!
