This building took its name from Sir Ralph Pendlebury who was a local benefactor. It opened in 1882 as an orphanage but later became Stockport Technical School. It is now in use as a care/ nursing home for the elderly.

Portwood, Stockport, just before its confluence with the River Tame to form the River Mersey.
'Flowing Clear from Stockport to the Sea'
The birth of the River Mersey in the middle of Stockport. It's a lot clearer now than when I was a boy. It was polluted with industrial waste, clods of foam floated by on the surface and it stank!
Where the Tame meets the Goyt

These two rivers join in the middle of Stockport to form the Mersey. The River Tame is seen here emerging from beneath the M60 motorway.

Wojtek the Bear
Memorial to animals who died in various conflicts. Woodbank Memorial Park, Stockport.
Wojtek was 'adopted' as a cub by Polish soldiers in Iran during World War 2. He stayed with them throughout battles in Europe, including Monte Cassino, where he helped to carry artillery shells. He got into numerous amusing scrapes, ending up with the Poles in Scotland where he eventually died in retirement in Edinburgh Zoo.
You can read his amazing story in 'Wojtek the Bear: Polish War Hero' by Aileen Orr.

A Weir on the River Goyt
Vernon Park, Stockport.
It was pleasing to see an angler and a kingfisher near this spot- evidence that the river is no longer polluted.
