When in doubt ...
ASK
Your Friends ...
Somebody just might know what this plant is ..
A volunteer beneath branches of the Dogwood and next to sidewalk ..
The 'thorn-appearing' spikes on the leaves are not prickly ..
It is 2ft plus a tad high ..
Have searched in all North Carolina flower/wildflower/weed sites ..
That I could locate ..

Prickly lettuce.
HMM.
Edible?
Good with a light vinaigrette perhaps?
If you had it in a salad for supper, please tell us what it was like!

Andy, someplace I looked said (at some time) it was used for medicinal purposes -- and was edible when leaves were small.

Didn't try it, so can't give a report.

When I had touched the prickly parts on the upper leaves, they were soft - not prickly at all.

But, when I began cutting it into sections the stem was sharp. Dug it out - tap root and all.
