Young Possum feeding ! 3-1-2018

Young Possum feeding ! 3-1-2018
I put cheap feeding pellets out for the wildlife. This youngster could not wait the other day for it to be put into the feeder !

Günter Klaus, Marco F. Delminho, Rainer Blankermann, Lucette and 57 other people have particularly liked this photo

It's an interesting geologic tale how the possum got to North America. Before the Central American land bridge formed about 6 million years ago, South America, like Australia, existed in spendid isolation with an indigenous marsupial population. Both continents are fragments of the ancient supercontinent Gondwanaland. When the land bridge arose, South America was invaded by placental mammals from North America, which ultimately wiped out the marsupial megafauna. The possum, however, went the other way and invaded North America! It's a small opportunistic creature that breeds rapidly, so what was a disaster for the big marsupials was an opportunity for it.

Glad you found it of interest, Pam! Paleontologists call it the Great American Biotic Interchange, and it was the most catastrophic thing to happen to South American fauna till the arrival of Europeans. Just shows that species invasions can happen naturally!

Oh Pam, where are the creatures finding any warmth with that frigid weather? Thankfully they have you to put food out for them. Our Lexington has been very cold at +2 f, which is rare as that is the coldest we've seen in the 10 years we have lived here. Add to that that we don't usually see sustained weather like this for as long as it has been hanging around these past few weeks. Of course in the higher elevations it has been far colder but the wind doesn't help either. This little town has been kept busy with broken water pipes. Hope your little buddy makes it through the harsh weather. :)

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww, how adorable is this?! Such a cutie pie.

Of course we have possums on our property. But we've never seen them! We don't feed them either though, so probably why we haven't seen coons either, though there are probably plenty as well. Did see a wild rat once outside. Plenty of mice, voles, a couple of shrews, and then the list just goes on. :)

Sweet that you offer food to the locals! :)
