Albert as the ice started 5-12-13

Oh dear, I am in love! What an adorable squirrel! Wowwwwww, it gets soooooooooo cold there!!! The coldest it's ever been here was 8 degrees. The next coldest was maybe 13 and then this morning. Keep warm sweetly!!!

The wind chill is now 2F.............

Poor Albert. Maybe he can wrap that magnificent tail around himself like a shawl. Hate to mention it, but we hit 15.6ºc Thursday in the Great White North...Heatwave!

It a windchill of 2F tonight.... we get these 60 degrees rises and falls in 24 - 36 hours here sometimes........

I always have water here.. always. Its how in deepest drought I built a 40 species of birds list. Then the squirrels.. and the deer/racoons/possums/barn cats from next door/insects... you name it !

I have heated water for them too. But also.... I put hot water out early morning(I have to be up for weather reports to CoCoRaHS) and I put hot out all day in freezing weather.

In drought.. I was the only water for a long long way

Congratulations on Explore, Pam. This is a great shot, if rather frosty. Albert certainly needs that fur coat in those conditions, I hope things warm again soon for you.

Congrats! 'Albert'? How can you tell them apart? Feel for you and that weather ... we have a 'Storm Warning' - like our son told us, "welcome back to NC!"
All our neighborhood utility lines are underground - but, not all parts of town are! So, if we get an ice storm --- just hope it is quick and over with .. prefer snow any day to ice!

Most educational Pam. Until now I thought squirrels hibernated!

They rarely do . Very few squirrels ot hedgehogs will hibernate unless there is very prolonged and very very cold weather. As long as they can get food they dont need to. Hibernation is risky... its really a near death thing. Often too the rare times they do... if the weather perks up.. they will be about eating. Body fat reserves have to be kept up
