South West WA

A Happy Bench Monday to everyone. Let us hope your day and your week are all you hope for. This bench is in the outdoor eating area of a quirky little café attached to Gracie's General Store in the small settlement of Gracetown, Western Australia. (I think it's the only café still extant in the town.) Although the town has merely 250 residents, it is a very popular surfing spot and is on the Cape to Cape walking track, which is some 130 km (80 miles) long. It is also a town sadly remembered for a tragedy in 1996 when the limestone cliff collapsed on a group of children and adults watching a surfing competition between students of two local schools. Four children and five adults were killed. An annual children's surfing competition is still held in remembrance.

May I wish you a Happy Fence Friday. I hope you all remain safe and contented wherever you are. This fence around the Cape Naturaliste light was merely decorative on the day I took this, the weather being sunny and calm. On some days, though, it is quite a dangerous undertaking to walk around the balcony, the wind coming in from the Indian Ocean can be very strong indeed. Not my idea of fun ...

A humpback calf enjoying life on its way back down south with its mum. The southern migration from the northern waters to the Southern Ocean has begun. This calf was born in the warmth of the Exmouth Gulf and Ningaloo in northern WA but will live in the cold waters of the south. It is probably less than four months old. This was taken in Geographe Bay, off the south west coast of WA, which is a natural break point and resting area on the journey, being generally calm and sheltered. We saw plenty of whales this year, which is a very pleasing development. I agree with the whale: life is grand, innit.

May I wish you all a Happy Fence Friday. This barbed wire fence is as nondescript as the building and the land it protects, preferring to be as hidden as possible so as not to give offence. Have a great day and a pleasurable weekend.

A Happy Bench Monday to everyone. This bench overlooks Flinders Bay and the Southern Ocean. The building is part of the historic site at the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, one of the storehouses. This is a windy part of Western Australia and sitting on the bench can be a precarious perch at times. On this day (my very oldth birthday) the wind wasn't too bad and I sat for a while and watched the choppy waters. The spit of land to the right (south west) is Seal Island. South of here is Antarctica. Have a great day and I hope the rest of the week is not too stressful for you.

Have a Tremendously Terrific Table Tuesday. Take care of yourself and others. This table is at the Hairy Marron Cafe in Margaret River. The hairy marron is a critically endangered freshwater crayfish which only exists in a small stretch of the Margaret River, a small stretch which is kept as secret as possible. Fishing for Smooth Marron is severely restricted in this area to try and protect the hairy variety.

A Happy Wednesday Wall to everyone. I hope your day and the rest of your week are full of fun and frolics. This wall is part of an underpass at the junction of National Route 1 and the new Bunbury Outer Ring Road in WA. Construction of this ring road has been going on for the last couple of years. It would be nice if it was completed in my life time, but who knows the secret ways of road planners. They do a nice line in bridge decoration though. Sorry it's a bit fuzzy, but the car window needs cleaning and there was no way She (Who Must Be Obeyed) would (or could) stop the car to let me take the picture. The woman has no sense of adventure ...
