Bullies

Bullies
The slender and delicate bell tower seen on the left once stood in splendid isolation in Barrack Square by the Swan River in Perth. The development of Elizabeth Quay now stands next to its spire. These hotels and appartments on the right now loom over it like bullies in a playground, dwarfing and intimidating it. Such is the price of progress, where money not only talks but swears loudly, proclaiming its power and daring us to want anything different.

(I've rung in this tower, a wonderful and quite exhilarating experience.)

So do I, Andy; I find them interesting and striking. After all I take enough pictures of them, don't I? But I don't always like the way the landscape is dominated by them.

oh i was there at the tower a couple of times when on holidays in Perth ,but we never went up in the tower ,i agree with you they are bullies ,it was beautiful how it was then there on the swan river,beautiful and Blue ..last time we were there all the construction was getting ready to begin! i bet it is completely ruined now

It's not ruined, it's just different from what it was. What bothers me is the change in the balance of things. I'm just an old fossil really, I suppose. There is a beauty in the new architecture too, but it is all so crowded and busy; no space for quietness.

An interesting point of view, both photographically and sociologically. The picture is beautiful despite the bitter observation.
