Milk Bottle

Whately, MA. Here's what www.roadsideamerica.com has to say: "There is a 17 foot high cement milk bottle on the main road in Whately. Built in the late 1920s by Lincoln Bond for the Quonquont Dairy Farm's dairy bar, the bottle once stood on Rt. 5, greeting visitors to the area. In 1995, the bottle, which is owned by the Whately Historical Society, was moved to its present site and restored. It is now situated in front of the town building, which houses the Historical Society and is used several times a year to dispense ice cream." See where this picture was taken. [?]

Whately, MA. Shade tobacco, used for the outer wrapping of cigars, is grown in the Connecticut River Valley under silk tents. The summer climate here most nearly replicates that of Honduras, the primary growing spot for this type of tobacco, of any place in North America. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Hampshire County Fountain

30 Aug 2006 179
Each town in the county has a stone with its name carved into it. I'd always heard that the stones for the four towns -- Enfield, Dana, Prescott and Greenwich -- that were flooded to make the Quabbin Reservoir were under the water line of the fountain. Apparently this is an urban legend. There's Enfield, above Southampton, between Amherst and Cummington. Northampton is the top stone, as it should be. Main and King Streets, Northampton, MA [?]
