Chiswick House Shutter

The home of the Earl of Burlington, built in 1726-1729. I snapped this inside before I learned that no photography was allowed -- don't tell!

Chiswick Mall. It feels really rural and wild here, probably just like it did 150 years ago. Becky Sharp threw her dictionary out the carriage window near here and bade farewell to Chiswick Mall at the beginning of Vanity Fair. I didn't find the spot where this allegedly took place, however.

Chiswick Mall. When the tide comes up, the water -- with whatever sewage it contains -- covers this grassy bit, which might account for the unusually bright green color of the grass. When the water is really high, it crosses the road behind where I was standing and reaches the doors of the posh houses.

This past summer, there were many large pieces by street artists painted on the outside walls of the Tate Modern. The day I went by, several had been removed and these two had sections that were covered with paint stripper.

I started my long walk to Canada Water from here (Tower Hill).

All Hallows by the Tower
| |
|
The oldest church in the City of London. Several American connections -- William Penn was baptised here, and John Quincy Adams married here. All Hallows survived the Great Fire through the efforts of Wm. Penn's father. It fared worse in WWII, and only the tower and the walls survived the bombs. There's a bit of Roman pavement in the crypt.
