The almshouses were originally built in 1836 in an Elizabethan style, then rebuilt in neo-Georgian style in 1965. Unlike many almshouses that have been converted to private ownership, these are still managed as social housing for the elderly by Westminster Council.

Charlbert Street, St John's Wood. RAK Studios was founded in 1976 by the legendary record producer Mickie Most, who was known for his hits with the Animals, Jeff Beck, Donovan, Suzi Quatro and Kim Wilde, among others. He was also a recording artist, record label boss and TV producer.

Plaque on the RAK Studios building, Charlbert Street, St John's Wood. Mickie was born Michael Hayes on 20th June 1938 in Aldershot, England. He discovered the Animals in a Newcastle club and produced their singles 'Baby, Let Me Take You Home' and 'House of the Rising Sun'. Throughout the sixties, Mickie cemented his reputation as a producer, working on hit records such as Herman's Hermits' 'I'm Into Something Good', Nashville Teens' 'Tobacco Road', Donovan's acclaimed 1966 album 'Sunshine Superman' and several Jeff Beck records.

Plaque on the RAK Studios building, Charlbert Street, St John's Wood. Lester Errol Brown MBE was a British-Jamaican singer and songwriter, best known as the frontman of the soul and funk band Hot Chocolate. In 2004, Brown received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.
