Medium; Technique: Limestone
Culture: Cypriot
Period: Archaic
Date: late 6th or early 5th century B.C.
Dimensions: H. 28 in. (71.1 cm)

Description:
This very fine sculpture shows Herakles as an archer. He has a quiver and scabbard, and was probably shown drawing his bow. The scale and pose suggest that he originally stood in a pediment. The subject and treatment of the drapery clearly reflect Greek influence; indeed, the archer strongly recalls his counterpart in the west pediment of the temple of Aphaia at Aegina.

Title: Terracotta barrel jug with strainer
Medium; Technique: Terracotta
Culture: Cypriot
Period: Cypro-Archaic I
Date: ca. 750–600 B.C.
Dimensions: H. 13 3/4 in. (35 cm) length 12 5/8 in. (32.1 cm) diameter 3 15/16 in. (10 cm)

Credit Line: The Cesnola Collection, Purchased by subscription, 1874–76
Accession Number: 74.51.517
Description:
Barrel-shaped jugs, with and without strainers, are quite common in Archaic Cypriot pottery. Because they do not stand on their own, they must have served a very specific function. Found in tombs mainly in eastern Cyprus, they may have been purely funerary. This example is decorated with a large bird in flight, his talons drawn up, flanked by a pair of lotus flowers.

Title: Terracotta figure
Medium; Technique: Terracotta; hand-made
Culture: Cypriot
Period: Cypro-Archaic II
Date: ca. 600–480 B.C.
Dimensions: H. 4 1/16 in. (10.3 cm)
Classification: Terracottas
Credit Line: The Cesnola Collection, Purchased by subscription, 1874–76
Accession Number: 74.51.1640
Description:
Man or monkey? The distinction is minimal in this spontaneous, engaging work. Seated with one foot over the other, the figure is eating or smelling what is probably a piece of fruit. Although Cypriot terracottas are often summarily executed, they clearly represent a medium that was used to capture a momentary or unusual subject, just as today we might make a snapshot or rapid sketch.

Description:
Six figures are represented in a narrative situation; five should probably be thought of as seated. The main personage in the center holds a staff in his right hand and wears a conical headdress. A figure to his right holds a small animal, while one to his left has a shield and scabbard. In front of the cluster of onlookers there is someone lying face down and being beaten with a stick by another person. The subject has prompted considerable discussion and been interpreted as a scene of punishment, partly by analogy with the detail on the Shield of Achilles described by Homer.
