The splintered trunk blocking the path to the green turf is both a realistic depiction of an obstacle common to mountain hikes and a metaphor for struggle and ambition. In 1984 this became the first painting by Friedrich to enter a museum collection in the United States, when it was acquired by the Kimbell Art Museum in Texas.
