Man with Lollipop by Picasso in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2008

Man with Lollipop by Picasso in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2008
Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973)

Man with Lollipop, 1938

Oil on paper mounted on canvas

Accession # 1999.363.69

The coarse stubble on the man's chin matches the basket-weave pattern on his hat and striped jersey, an effect that Picasso first used in 1938. He painted this work while vacationing in the small hilltop village of Mougins, a few miles inland from Cannes, on the Cote d'Azur. It is one of a series depicting locals or tourists- mostly men- sucking lollipops.
