Severan Portrait of a Man in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, December 2010

Severan Portrait of a Man in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, December 2010
Marble portrait of a man

Period: Severan

Date: first half of the 3rd century A.D.

Culture: Roman

Medium: Marble

Dimensions: H. 9 1/16 in. (23 cm)

Classification: Stone Sculpture

Credit Line: Rogers Fund, 1907

Accession Number: 07.286.112

Description:

In this masterful portrait of a man with a deep frown and sunken cheeks, the roughly chiseled hair and beard contrast with the highly polished face. The portrait was probably set into a bust, as the underside of the neck is carefully tooled.
