Manet at his Easel by Bazille in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2010

Manet at his Easel by Bazille in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2010
Jean-Frederic Bazille (French, 1841-1870)
Manet at his Easel, 1868-1870(?)
Charcoal, blue and white chalk, on blue laid paper

From the Robert Lehman Collection, Accession # 1975.1.569

This sensitive drawing testifies to the collaboration and friendship among the prominent Impressionist painters. It was likely made in Bazille's Paris studio on the rue de la Condamine just a year before the artist's untimely death in the Franco-Prussian War, when his relationship with Manet had grown especially close.
