Clotilde de Sorolla, the wife of the painter, was the daughter of his friend and patron Don Antonio García.

The Museum acquired the present painting in 1909, when Sorolla's immense reputation in Spain extended to New York. Between 1911 and 1920, Sorolla completed a series of fourteen mural panels for the Hispanic Society of America, New York.
