Cézanne painted still lifes throughout his career, often using them for formal and technical experimentation. The distinctive olive-hued wallpaper in the background of this painting appears, with minor variations, in four other still lifes by Cézanne, as well as in two figure paintings he made about 1877. The wallpaper apparently hung in a room in the Paris apartment that the artist occupied intermittently from about 1877 until 1879.
